I will remember that horrible death
What happened to diver Mukesh Kumar was unspeakable , trapped 120ft in an underwater chamber for 72 hours after his foot got sucked into a drainage pipe . He was a diver by profession who worked for Drafting Marine Engineering Company , he and his team were sent to purulia to repair a leak in the reservoir . Diving in a pitch black vertical tunnel filled with water has its own problem , but when your foot gets stuck and your attempts to release fail , you are in deep trouble . Every workplace has its own dangers , it is the duty of the management to take necessary precautions and keep a backup plan incase something goes wrong . Something did go gravely wrong for Mukesh . He was unable to free himself from the tremendous water pressure . I can't imagine myself being in that situation , and worse , in a state where life of one single worker is not valued .
From the start when the mishap happened it was clear that there was not enough experienced man-power and technology to save Mukhesh from that kind of a situation . Whenever divers were being sent to check him out , he grappled with them , instincts taking over him , in a desperate attempt to free himself . He was being fed oxygen from the surface , but it was not sure how long he could go on like this . Project manager , said amputation was the last resort and a move not without complications. However , it was too late to make such an attempt when the dam diver was still alive . Finally , his body was brought out today, four days after he got stuck underneath , with his leg sawed off . Had the authorities been quick to response , perhaps Mukesh could have been alive .

My views on Avatar
James Camaron's Avatar is a big hit this year and surely will be bagging some Oscars . The film is a sci fi based around the planet Pandora , where humans have set up their new home . A company has been exploiting the natural resources of the planet and mining in territories considered sacred by the native Na'vis . The Na'vi was hostile towards the humans , so they come up with the AVATAR program where humans controlled Biodroids that were created using the gnome of both humans and na'vi . It was through these avatars that humans planned to win the hearts and minds of the native population and eventually , peacefully make them relocate , away from mineral rich areas .
This story seems to me to be an echo of the conquest and exploitation of the Americas , and also a little environmental message . Just like the European invasion , the human intrusion was carried out of companies trying to grab lands to exploit for their richness . During the late 19th centuries , the native americans were constantly being evicted by the Americans as the USA continued to expand westwards . In many cases the hills and mountains where the natives had settled , were rich with gold and silver deposits . As a result the american government , with the backing of large companies began to relocate the natives . They were taught a western ways of life and as a result lost most of their heritage .
Unlike the Egyptian or Roman civilizations , the native american civilizations of north america didnot have the habit of writing down their own history and customs , and each of their cultures were different , from the Creek , the Inuit , the Cherokee , the Apache . When the bond between the generations were broken and the children no longer practiced the ways of their ancestors , the culture died out .
Like the natives , the na'vis too believed that every living creature , and non-living creature had a soul and all these souls of the planet was bound to the Great Mother . When we look at our own history and identity we find that almost all the old cultures had a similar view . What shocked and saddened me most was when Sam Worthington spoke to the sacred tree telling it that there is no speck of green on Earth and we have killed our own Mother .

Mao is no longer a godly figure that rules China . Modern Chinese see english movies , go to western discos , learn kung-fu moves etc . Which were not tolerated in a Maoist society . Only a commie would still go on blindly following a book . Everyone knows that these so-called Socialist movements were all about the handful of people who were ruling the party . However the truth is there can be no classless society . Some people will be beteroff than others . The failure of the socialist ideology only highlighted this universal truth . Socialist ideology cannot be scrapped either , because the laborers and the workers form the base of the society and they must be empowered otherwise the society will become unstable . Strangely , workers in USA and West Europe enjoy more rights compared to the workers in the former USSR countries and PRC !

The Earth will fight back !
If you haven't noticed it by now , we have already past Earth's population limit . To make Earth inhabitable and enjoyable for all we should be having around a billion homo sapiens . Its not the present population that it actually the problem , it is the growth rate . The Earth can only provide our needs , not our greed . While our need would include the basic necessities of life , like food , shelter , our greed would consist of much of our daily stuff like the internet . It is already too late to avoid significant global heating and significant climate change which will make large parts of the Earth's surface much less hospitable for humans. This is in a way Earth hitting back at the humans . You shifted the balance of the carbon-CO2 cycle , so now you pay !
The world's population cannot go on increasing forever , if we can control it ourselves , good . Otherwise , people will die until the limit is reached and balance is maintained .

Planet Earth Is in deep trouble
Planet Earth is in deep trouble , and i can feel it in the air . It rained here tonight ... what rain ? Does it ever rain during winter ? No , but actually it was good news . Finally we will be getting some much needed winter chill .
The problem started back in the summer season , with the scarcity of rainfall . Last year there was overproduction of crops , so the villagers , like , had to sell all their harvests off , and at much lower prices . The farmers who failed to do so , got their crops rotting in their backyard . Many of them could not repay back the loans they had taken from landlords and banks . Some even committed suicide , same as the year before last :-/ .
So this year , it could be either the lack of rainfall , or the willingness of the farmers not to sow too much crops drove up prices . The lack of foodstuff forced the govt to import food from neighboring countries and even Australia . However tonnes of potatoes , rice lay stacked at the harbour and rotted , due to disputes between the harbour authorities and govt .
Coming out of these meager disputes and looking at the broader perspective , whatever man had been doing to Mother Earth , it is a miracle she is still alive , or should i say , she has kept it well enough for us to stay alive . Ice free Earth did not wipe out the dinosaurs , nor can it wipe us out . Then again , it is not the question of our survival , it is about how well each one of us can live .

Security forces discover jannat(Heaven) in South Waziristan
| PESHAWAR: Security forces on Friday discovered jannat (heaven) in South Waziristan Agency, with which terrorists used to brainwash suicide bombers. According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), a team of journalists visited the jannat at Nawaz Kot area of the agency. The ‘heaven’ consisted of four rooms. Each room contains beautiful paintings of running canals of milk and honey surrounded by hoors (maidens of paradise). Conducting Officer Major Saleem said Taliban clerics showed the jannat to the would-be suicide bombers to convince them that once they blew themselves up they would enjoy a status equivalent to that of the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He said they were also told that they would live forever in the company of beautiful hoors. He said security forces had also seized hate literature, CDs, hashish and other drugs from the site. The official said two would-be suicide bombers and their trainers were also arrested from the place. app |
