For humans to upgrade to the next level of civilization they will have to stop depending on fossils for power, dissolve national boundaries, and find an alternative medium of exchange to money. Other minor hindrances such as multiple languages, cultural practices, religion and the concept of family will be irrelevant for future needs.
In other words, if we continue to be the animal we are, we will rot in the corner of the galaxy.
